CURS/CamRuSS Maslenitsa, 17 February

CU Russian Society in collaboration with Cambridge Russian-Speaking Society organises a celebration of Maslenitsa! An unforgettable, authentic Slavonic event – absolutely not to be missed!

  • WHEN: 17 February, 5:30 till late.
  • WHERE: St. Paul’s Church on Hills Road (Cambridge CB2 1JP)

Features:

  • famous Russian food (obviously BLINY);
  • traditional dancing, singing, and merry-making;
  • colourful costumes;
  • music (with piano, guitar and singing), games (including famous kissing games!) and competitions;
  • entertainment for children;
  • recipes and tasting;
  • an informal talk on ethnic drinking traditions (and how not to get drunk!)
  • real aouthentical ritual of burning the straw scarecrow (Mokosh’, the symbol of Maslenitza)
  • and a lively disco till late, with a number of surprises…

TICKETS: 2 pounds for members of the participating societies; 4 pounds for all others; children free. This entitles you to 6 vouchers; 1 voucher buys a pancake with a standard filling, or a glass of wine, tea with lemon etc. Further vouchers can be purchased during the evening for only 50p each.

WHO CAN COME FREE: Those who volunteer to bring 20 pancakes or more are granted free entrance (i.e. they are given 6 free vouchers). If you bring more, you’ll get reimbursed with vouchers/cash. Also, volunteers to help at the door, or to sell pancakes and drinks.

FOOD AND DRINK: Various fillings (both savoury and sweet), as well as a certain amount of vodka, wine + soft drinks. However, people are encouraged to bring their own food and drinks as well (to share). This would add extra variety to the party.
