FROM RUSSIA WITH MEDAL

Prof Simon Franklin, the winner of the ’Lomonosov Grand Gold Medal’ will give a talk on how he came to be interested in studying Russia and the main themes and contributions of his research over three decades. Prof Simon Franklin heads up the Department of Slavonic Studies in Cambridge.

His award citation from the Russian Academy of Science reads: “For outstanding work on the ethno-political and cultural history of Russia and the significant contribution to the study of early Russian written culture and early Russian literature.”

The Lomonosov Gold Medal, named after Russian scientist and polymath Mikhail Lomonosov, has been awarded each year since 1959 for outstanding achievements in the natural sciences and the humanities by the USSR Academy of Sciences, later the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS).

There will be an opportunity to ask some questions in the end.

- The President of the Mikael Tariverdiev Charity Foundation.

Ekaterina Melnikova
- An incredible organist, one of the most outstanding musicians of nowadays (see reviews on: http://melnikovamusic.ru/ )
Graduated from Moscow Conservatory and Royal Academy of Music (London); she got many prestigious awards on competitions; Ekaterina is making transcriptions for organ, acting in documentary films; she has played with the most renowned musicians (Vladimir Fedoseev, Teodor Kourenzis, etc) in the most famous concert halls (Tchaikovsky Hall, Cologne Cathedral, Westminster Abby, etc).

The FIRST concert “Quo Vadis?” (25 October) is dedicated to the creativity of Mikael Tariverdiev.

One of the most profound and tremendous compositions in the whole history of Organ music will be performed: Tariverdiev’s organ Symphony “Chernobyl” — devoted to the unforgettable world catastrophy.
“This Catastrophy became significant for 20th Century. This was felt by Milael Tariverdiev and he conveyed this in his Symphony. It is not accidental that two Movements in Symphony entitled “Zona” and “Quo Vadis?” (“Where are you going?”)

PRE-CONCERT TALK by Vera Tariverdieva

The SECOND concert (26 October) is entitled “The popular music from the popular Movies.”

You will enjoy all the melodies adored by everybody, including Stanley Kubrick’s ‘Space Odyssey’, Eldar Ryazanov ‘Beregis’ avtomobilya’, ‘Games Bond’ movies; compositions by Borodin (amazing Polovetzian dance), Bach and Prokofiev (‘Ivan the Terrible’).

CURS SUNDAY PUNTING AND BBQ

Following in true Cambridge and CURS tradition (weather permitting),
we are organising a PUNTING afternoon. Whether you have or haven’t
tried this wonderful aquatic exercise before, it is certainly worth
some of your afternoon time especially if spent with lovely people such
as us.

WHEN: Sunday, 19th October, 1PM
WHERE: Trinity College main gate, Trinity Street
HOW MUCH: FREE FOR CURS MEMBERS
1 POUND FOR EVERYBODY ELSE

After the punting we would like to invite everybody to participate in a
barbecue. Summer will soon be over but but CURS will always have a BBQ,
regardless of weather.

Yuri Polubelov Concert

CU Russian Society is pleased to invite you to a very special concert.
Yuri Polubelov, world famous pianist, renowned interpreter of the contemporary music.

He gave concerts all over the world including Europe and United States. His repertoire includes all music of all epochs; one of his most outstanding characteristics is performing the contemporary music and the music of Viennese school; that is what he was renowned for by many critics in Allgemaine Zeitung, New-York Times, etc.

Now we are welcoming him in Cambridge!

WHEN: Sunday, 12 October, 2pm
WHERE: Gonville & Caius College, Bateman Auditorium (Map).

CURS SQUASH

In case you haven’t managed to find us at the CUSU Soceities Fair, do
not worry. There is still plenty of opportunity to find out about our
society by meeting our committee and other members over some drinks and
snacks. We are also extending our invitation to all existing members,
who would like to meet up with their friends from CURS after the long
summer breaks. Last year, 50+ people dropped in for our Squash. This
year we aim to maintain and hopefully to surpass that set standard.

So please do come to meet a multitude of remarkable and friendly people
from many places around the world to share the Russian culture and
become part of the spirit.

To find the Latimer room, enter Clare College from trinity lane main
gate, walk to the middle of the quad and turn left. Walk through a set
of old wooden doors and Latimer room is on your immediate left. A
friendly committee member will greet you. To help you find your way we
may put a sign up, so look out for it.

PLEASE NOTE: Clare college normally charges tourists for entry. Do not
be put off by the porter in the hut at the gate. If you are
a university member, then please flash you university card.
If you do not have a university card, please tell the
porter that you are going to the Latimer Room for a meeting
We will notify them of our event.

DO NOT mention the word “SQUASH” to the porters, they
will not like it!!! Some other societies have rather loud
and messy squashes and to the porters the word means
trouble. Use the word “MEETING” instead.
