CURS Conversational Evenings, weekly

…thanks once again for your help with my (and everyone’s) Russian. It has certainly paid off in my case as my Russian has helped me to find a rather exciting IUCN job as Biodiversity Programme Coordinator for the southern Caucasus.

Was the Conversational Evening successful?
A quote from Dima Dubovitskij: “The Conversational Evening entertained me, and also energized me for my next business meeting”.
As for myself, I learnt several new proverbs during the Evening, and was astonished that I nearly forgot some of the commonly used Russian words.
But certainly the most enjoyable part were the jokes that naturally accompanied the narration of Katya and Draga. Those guys who attended the Evening in order to learn and practice the Russian language have quickly realised that CURS is great fun.

Conversational Evenings have proved very popular among the Society’s members learning Russian. Native Russian-speaking volunteers (often Committee members) help intermediate and advanced level learners to improve their Russian in a friendly and informal atmospere. We aim to provide at least one native speaker for three learners. Conversational Evenings are usually held on a weekly basis during term time, and sometimes – depending on demand and availability of helpers – out of term time. Unfortunately, due to the volunteering nature of the Evenings we are unable to provide any formal training in Russian and refer you to one of the other means for learning Russian in Cambridge.

Materials from the conversational evening 15 Oct 2008 are available here. More recent ones are also russian_holidays_events, russian-sayings-and-folk-wisdoms and bards_songs.

Ah, you don’t know what Mafia is? Well, it’s an original role game! Under the cover of night, cruel Mafiosi come in a city with the cruel intention to take hold of it. But with the help of a courageous Commisaire, a merciful Doctor and a wild Maniac, the peaceful inhabitants will try to repulse the Mafia!

All are welcome but a fluent knowledge of Russian may come indispensable for uncovering clever Mafiosi;).

CURS Film Night

The Banishment

A big thank you to all who came to our Movie Night this week. We hope that you have enjoyed the film. There was certainly something impressionable left in us afterwards to talk about it.

To continue our programme of Quality Russian Cinema we will be showing you “Izgnaniye (The Banishment)”, directed by Cannes laureate Andrei Zvyagintsev. The director is famous for his first film “Vozvrasheniye (The Return)”.

We are working on the time and venue, and will let you know ASAP.

Russian Society Cambridge Film Night: Banishment

DISCLAIMER: THIS FILM HAS NO ENGLISH SUBTITLES

Synopsis: A husband, wife and two children (a boy and a girl) come from an industrial city to the countryside, to the husband’s birthplace, to stay in his father’s old house. In contrast to the old setting (the city that brightens up the relations between the characters, that smooths the rough edges, and even creates some illusion of happiness and love), the new setting is Nature. It is a setting of breathtaking rolling hills, the bottom of a prehistoric sea, and fertile land, all lying in the ruins of dislike. It is sad even though it is proud. It doesn’t let on. It will demand great sacrifice. And no one will hold back the hand the father raises against his son. The voice crying out will not be heard. The son will not be replaced by the lamb. For the one who raises the knife has ears that can not hear, eyes that can not see, and a heart that can not feel. Yet his belief in the “law” of human pride is vehement and inexhaustible, as vehement as his remorse. The seed has been planted and the harvest must follow.

Slavonic amateur(-ish) football, most weekends

We cordially invite everyone to join a friendly Slavonic company playing football (soccer) on most weekends. The game standard is frankly amateur(-ish), so everyone is welcome (even if you only vaguely remember watching football ten years ago)! Lots of fun guaranteed!

Please e-mail football [@russiancambridge.org] for more details or just subscribe to our list of announcements.
