The Tale of Maria the Storyteller: Traditions and Customs of the Russian North in Tales and Epic

On 17th January Trinity College Russian Society, in collaboration with CU Russian Society, is bringing you the fine art of the popular Russian theatrical and storytelling tradition.

The first Russian event of Lent 2009 in Cambridge is:
“Maria the Story-Teller: tales and epics of Northern Russia”

Performed by Mrs Mlada Kalashnikova-Kapitza of Moscow State Academic Philharmonic Society.

Mrs. M. Kalashnikova-Kapitza is Russia’s second to none stand-up narrator who has gained prominence for her unique literature readings. Mrs. Kalashnikova-Kapitza frequently tours Russia and her concerts are always well received. This time Mrs. Kalashnikova-Kapitza is presenting the story and legacy of another prominent woman, Maria Krivopolenova a.k.a. Maria the Story-Teller.

A gifted narrator and performer, Maria the Story-Teller (1843-1924)
was a true genius of Russian folklore. Known for her tremendous memory
capacity and distinct style she was loved by professional researchers
and amateur folklore admirers alike. The concert will feature the life
story of Maria the Story-Teller as well as selected tales, epics and
other episodes of Russian folklore ascribed to her.
