This time it was a presentation of Quastel Midgen LLP, a relatively small but quickly developing legal firm. What is really exciting is that one of its founding partners, Jonathan Gross, is an alumnus of our University.

During the presentation we had a substantial introduction to the firm’s specialisation which is mainly legal branches related to immigration and real estate. The part on immigration actualities was extremely useful for the majority of the audience.

Also some of the attendees discussed an opportunity to undergo practical training during this summer.

The event was attended not only by CURS members but also by students from other societies: CU Korean, CU Australia and New Zealand Society, CU Ukrainian, CU Eurasia Society and many others.

This initiative started ten years ago in Novosibirsk. And this year it has already covered 181 cities!

The text of the Dictation was written by Dina Rubina, a prominent Russian prose writer. To be honest, the text itself was difficult enough for many of those who dared to test one’s spelling and punctuation skills. But at the same time, many participants agreed that it was a good way to try to remember everything you learned at school and understand what else should be improved.

We would like to thank the organisers or the Dictation for the great opportunity to be a part of this initiative. Also we express our gratitude to all who came to check their level of literacy last Saturday. You can find few pictures of people writing dictation here.

Mikhail spoke about his life a bit, then read one of his novels (believe me, genuine author’s reading is a totally different experience comparing to reading a book). Later we had a questions and answers session, where CamRuss took an initiative and, finally, Mikhail played a guitar and performed his songs (in addition to all his talents, he also had a rock-band). After the meeting, people went to La Strada to have a dinner with Mikhail and somewhat torture him with more questions. The evening left a very warm feeling and we hope to welcome Mikhail in Cambridge again in the future.

The CURS Vodka Party 2013 can only be described as a resounding success! After an extensive process of preparation, the night was finally upon us, with an unprecedented number of people attending!

We are proud to have treated you to a great variety of top-quality vodkas, ranging from ones that could be found in the UK to the most unique Siberian vodkas and Udmurtian liquers. With a total of six societies- Russian, Estonian, Finnish, Hungarian, Romanian and Ukrainian- participating, there was also a variety of luxury and local foods such as Russian caviar, salmon, sardines, pelmeni and even desserts to enjoy! We made sure the night was a complete and authentic experience, entertaining our guests with music from the home countries of the participating groups and a raffle.

We would like to thank all those who helped with advertising and spreading the enthusiasm we ourselves feel for this event! The Vodka Party is a central event in the CURS calendar, where we come together with others who share our vision to increase our visibility within the University community, and provide a great night for students and friends in Cambridge! Overall, there were over 500 extremely happy attendees, so BRING ON VODKA PARTY 2014!

It was an incredible experience! Last Sunday we had 275 hand-made pancakes cooked by us especially for Cambridge University Russian Society’s members. But the most fascinating part of ‘Maslenitsa’ event was fillings and dips that were provided with the pancakes. Among the most favorite ones were Siberian blackcurrant jam, old fashioned condensed milk and, of course, red Kamchatkan caviar!
The event had a really warm and cosy atmosphere which we shared between each other for more than three hours of endless talkings and pleasant tea drinking.
Despite the fact that kind Pembroke College porters did not allow us to burn a traditional Maslenitsa’s scarecrow because of some weird health and safety regulations, the event we had last Sunday definitely acquired a ‘worth attending’ status during next years!

Please find here some pictures of this wonderful event (and pancake cooking as well).

We were also delighted to be joined by two more teams from London, which did not only prove to be excellent players, but also helped to relax the Oxbridge competitive tension.
Overall, after two days of mind-stretching questions, fascinating facts and tonnes of jokes and fun, we came to the mutually pleasing conclusion, namely, that such events should be organised on a regular basis. And who knows, maybe in a couple of years time, we will be congratulating the first “What?Where? When?” Full Blues…

The game was important since it was decisive for the 1/16 stage of the UEFA Europa League playoff round (you could tell by the number of LFC fans in the Liverpool-bound train from Euston). Although Zenit lost 1-3 at Anfield, its previous 2-0 win at the first match in St. Petersburg allowed the blue-azure-white team to make it further into 1/8th. Most Liverpudlians at the Anfield stadium were nice and greeted us notwithstanding the outcome for those who’ll “never walk alone” (LFC anthem).

Overall, the supporter mission turned out eventful and pleasant, even despite one refusal to enter a local Anfield pub (most probably, for the better of all) and one attempt to provoke violence from local hooligans successfully prevented by a Liverpool police convoy (kudos to the attentive officers).

Besides compulsory sightseeing, our tour of Liverpool the next day featured the tasting of famous Scouse in a pub coincidentally called Baltic Fleet. This name, heart-warming for any Petersburger, is owed to Russian sailors of the said fleet who, in mid-19th century, frequently used to eat at this still very hospitable pub close t to the Albert Dock. Merseyside certainly had mercy.

Thanks to the 15 lovely guys who showed up we had a wonderful evening full of socializing, laughing, and having a lot of fun. We first started with the Anchor and then went to the Bath House, the Eagle, and finally ended up in the Fountain. In all of the places we managed to find a big table that can gather all of us together instead of having to stand up all the time which made the event even more pleasant. Please find few pictures from the event here.

A sommelier from The Cambridge Wine Merchants talked us through a series of eight wines, comparing the nose and taste, and explaining how wine is made in the process. The tasting included New World Sauvignon Blanc and Riesling/Gewurz, an unusual white Rioja from Spain, Pinot Noir from Chile, Spanish Rioja, French Syrah and Australian Shiraz. It was lovely to meet members from a cross- section of CURS, and we had a lot fun discussing and choosing our favourite wines of the night! A lovely, intimate evening which we look forward to repeating sometime soon! Please get in touch with the CURS Secretary for more details of the wines tasted.
